{"id":81243,"date":"2024-01-09T13:25:00","date_gmt":"2024-01-09T14:25:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/?p=81243"},"modified":"2024-11-11T13:21:00","modified_gmt":"2024-11-11T13:21:00","slug":"electrification_nerc_nr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/?p=81243","title":{"rendered":"Penner sounds alarm as BC faces increasing risks to electricity reliability"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE<br>January 9th, 2024<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>VANCOUVER, BC \u2013 The Chair of the Energy Futures Initiative is calling for a swift response based on new information showing British Columbia emerging as an \u2018at-risk area\u2019 for energy as soon as 2026, after a year in which BC Hydro imported record amounts of electricity to help keep the lights on.<br><br>Barry Penner, who was appointed Chair for the Energy Futures Initiative last month, is pointing to the latest annual&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nerc.com\/pa\/RAPA\/ra\/Reliability%20Assessments%20DL\/NERC_LTRA_2023.pdf#page108\" target=\"_blank\">forecast<\/a>&nbsp;published by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) stating that for British Columbia \u201cenergy risks increase in 2026 as forecasted demand increases and natural-gas-fired generation retires.\u201d NERC did not identify such a risk for British Columbia in their report last year.<br><br>&#8220;This report is highly concerning,\u201d said Penner. \u201cIf our energy system ceases to be reliable, we could find ourselves facing an energy crisis \u2014 one that would have a significant impact on BC residents and businesses alike.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The independent report comes amidst a recent decision from the BC Utilities Commission (BCUC) to reject a $327 million proposal that would have increased natural gas capacity in the Okanagan. BCUC pointed in part to the government\u2019s CleanBC policy for their decision, which calls for electricity to replace natural gas for heating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe currently don\u2019t have enough domestic power generation to meet the needs of today, even before additional electrification in the future,\u201d continued Penner. \u201cReliance on imported energy from jurisdictions dealing with their own challenges could put British Columbians at risk of electricity shortages and higher user costs.&#8221;<br><br>Penner has previously drawn attention to British Columbia\u2019s status as a net importer of electricity. BC Hydro has acknowledged importing a record amount of electricity in 2023, representing at least 20% of total needs and nearly twice the projected output of the still unfinished Site C dam in northeast BC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe know Site C alone won\u2019t meet our province\u2019s growing energy needs,\u201d concluded Penner. \u201cFurther expanding domestic energy production and lessening our reliance on out-of-province sources will allow us to ensure an affordable and reliable system for years to come.\u201d<br><br>As a part of the Energy Futures Initiative, Penner intends to release further information on the state of energy in British Columbia later in January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>-30-<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Media Contact<\/strong><br>Taylor Verrall<br>250-508-3067<br><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"mailto:taylor@resourceworks.com\" target=\"_blank\">taylor@resourceworks.com<\/a><br><br>Background:<br><br><strong>Barry Penner, KC<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Barry Penner served as BC\u2019s Minister of Environment, Minister of Aboriginal Relations and Attorney General during his four terms as a MLA.
