This time, the size of the oil and gas industry in BC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Changes to the royalty system could have a dramatic impact on BC and Canada as a whole. Some see it as a chance to wipe out the industry. Others see one of the greatest tools for reducing poverty in Indigenous communities, rebuilding our health system, and even playing a part as a global climate solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As interest groups see the royalty review as a way to remake BC in their image, let\u2019s take a look at one of the top five myths surrounding BC natural gas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The size of BC oil and gas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Myth: \u201cOil and gas is a marginal player in BC\u2019s economy.\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if Canadian energy contributes to government revenues in provinces like Alberta, you might assume that\u2019s not the case in a province like BC, supposedly built on tourism and film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might be used to hearing pressure groups repeat a talking point sometimes heard online that \u201cthe oil and gas industry is a marginal play in BC\u2019s overall economy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to this reasoning, industries like natural gas should simply be shut down if they contribute to greenhouse gas emissions more than, say, Vancouver\u2019s tech industry. But are natural resource industries like natural gas the marginal players you might have been led to believe?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reality: Oil and gas are keystone industries in BC.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Somehow, the myth that BC is purely a film, tech, and tourism province has become widespread. While these are valuable industries, they by no means represent the bulk of the economy. In the age of COVID-19 and travel restrictions, this is especially the case for tourism. Government revenue from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/t1\/tbl1\/en\/tv.action?pid=3610046101&amp;cubeTimeFrame.startYear=2012&amp;cubeTimeFrame.endYear=2020&amp;referencePeriods=20120101%2C20200101\">tourism collapsed 27%<\/a>&nbsp;from 2019 to 2020 and is unlikely to see a miraculous comeback anytime soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/BCs_Base_Economy-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-84782\" srcset=\"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/BCs_Base_Economy-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/BCs_Base_Economy-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/BCs_Base_Economy-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/BCs_Base_Economy.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, you might be suprised to find that natural resource industries make up half of BC\u2019s base economy. The province often fails to tell its resource story. And even then, natural gas is often ignored. Yet, BC contributed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cer-rec.gc.ca\/en\/data-analysis\/energy-markets\/provincial-territorial-energy-profiles\/provincial-territorial-energy-profiles-british-columbia.html\">32% of all of the natural gas produced in Canada<\/a>&nbsp;in 2018. That\u2019s expected to grow over the next decade to the point where BC produces&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cer-rec.gc.ca\/en\/data-analysis\/canada-energy-future\/2021\/canada-energy-futures-2021.pdf\">even more<\/a>&nbsp;liquefied natural gas (LNG) than Alberta by 2028.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/BC_Natural_Gas_Production-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-84784\" srcset=\"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/BC_Natural_Gas_Production-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/BC_Natural_Gas_Production-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/BC_Natural_Gas_Production-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/BC_Natural_Gas_Production.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The fact is, natural resources, including natural gas, provide thousands of jobs and billions in government revenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The natural gas industry in BC provides about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:6843635980268896256\/\">56,649 jobs<\/a>&nbsp;and will contribute $5.1 billion in government tax revenue and $122 million in economic activity over the next ten years. Oil and gas represent 19% of BC\u2019s exports and contribute about five times as much to the economy as the average sector. In just the 2019-2020 year, BC received about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.capp.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/British-Columbias-Oil-and-Natural-Gas-Industry-357681-1.pdf\">$575 million<\/a>&nbsp;from oil and natural gas land sales and royalties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Far from a marginal or declining sector, natural gas is one of BC\u2019s keystone industries.
