{"id":81515,"date":"2021-12-07T05:41:00","date_gmt":"2021-12-07T06:41:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/?p=81515"},"modified":"2024-11-12T16:44:12","modified_gmt":"2024-11-12T16:44:12","slug":"ruining-our-names","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/?p=81515","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;They&#8217;re ruining our names,&#8221; say Wet&#8217;suwet&#8217;en community members"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>British Columbians have lately been hearing a lot about the Wet&#8217;suwet&#8217;en people. But, as new blockades and anti-pipeline protests appear in the province&#8217;s north, the loudest voices are not always representative of the community. In fact, in this case, the loudest chorus comes from outsiders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite what you might hear on social media,&nbsp;the vast majority of impacted First Nations along Coastal Gaslink&#8217;s (CGL&#8217;s) pipeline route took advantage of the opportunities consultation afforded them. That list of 20 First Nations includes Wet\u2019suwet\u2019en First Nation and other elected band councils.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, in December 2014, during consultations, Wet&#8217;suwet&#8217;en First Nation signed a natural gas pipeline benefit agreement with BC for the CGL Pipeline.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For governments with limited income and employment sources, that new revenue could mean a future previously thought impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Karen Ogen-Toews, former elected chief of the Wet&#8217;suwet&#8217;en First Nation and current elected&nbsp;councillor,&nbsp;remains&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/wetsuweten-whos-who-guide-1.5471898\">a vocal supporter of the pipeline<\/a>, having signed one of the approval agreements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve done the right thing for our people and my heart is in the right place&#8230; If our people are living in poverty, the way to overcome it is through proper training, trades, education and a job.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/KOT-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-84742\" srcset=\"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/KOT-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/KOT-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/KOT-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/KOT.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Karen Ogen-Toews, former elected chief of Wet&#8217;suwet&#8217;en First Nation and CEO of First Nations LNG Alliance. Photo from BC Business.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>By September 2018, CGL had signed agreements with all 20 elected Indigenous bands along the pipeline route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gary Naziel, a councillor for Witset First Nation and hereditary sub-chief, said: &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coastalgaslink.com\/whats-new\/news-stories\/2018\/2018-09-13coastal-gaslink-signs-agreements-with-100-per-cent-of-b.c.-elected-indigenous-bands-along-the-pipeline-route\/\">This project will provide jobs<\/a>, contracts and financial benefits that Witset First Nation can use to enhance programs and initiatives for our citizens, such as language and cultural programs. We look forward to continuing to work together with the Coastal GasLink project toward these common goals.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CGL also offered a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadianenergycentre.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/CEC-Fact-Sheet-9-20-BC-First-Nations-Pipeline-Prosperity-FINAL-1.pdf\">10% stake in the $6.6 billion project to the 20 First Nations<\/a>&nbsp;whose elected leadership signed agreements. Other benefits include $1 billion in employment and contract opportunities for local First Nations and additional training and scholarships for workers and students. In January 2020, Indigenous workers comprised&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coastalgaslink.com\/sustainability\/indigenous-relations\/#indigenous-engagement\">25% of the pipeline&#8217;s active workforce<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Canadian Energy Centre, &#8220;The Coastal GasLink agreements (and other, future resource projects) have the potential to provide revenues to communities where existing own source tax revenues are scarce. Also, direct work on pipelines or other resource projects including from future spin-off economic activity has the potential to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadianenergycentre.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/CEC-Fact-Sheet-9-20-BC-First-Nations-Pipeline-Prosperity-FINAL-1.pdf\">raise employment rates and lower unemployment<\/a>&nbsp;rates.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Philip Tait experienced this first hand. The Wet&#8217;suwet&#8217;en member of Beaver Clan drives a haul truck for Kyah Resources, a business owned by Witset First Nation and Moricetown Band Development Corporation. The company was hired to help build the right-of-way for the pipeline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/FN_Agreements_Map-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-84745\" srcset=\"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/FN_Agreements_Map-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/FN_Agreements_Map-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/FN_Agreements_Map-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/FN_Agreements_Map.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Tait used to work in forestry. But, he said, &#8220;with the forestry going down, we need every little bit more that we can get right now. And this is going to pump a lot of money into the taxes and into the communities and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/392040628\">feed a lot of families<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But not everyone shares Tait&#8217;s practical concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOn social media, if you\u2019re against the hereditary chiefs, their supporters jump right on you. Right from the beginning, I\u2019ve said I\u2019m going to say my piece and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/5dmyvk\/what-its-like-living-in-a-region-divided-by-a-pipeline-and-colonialism\">I\u2019m not going to be bullied<\/a>,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the past, Tait had been prevented from accessing his worksite by blockaders. In the small community, it&#8217;s easy to notice locals. Yet, when Resource Works interviewed Tait, he said he only saw two Wet&#8217;suwet&#8217;en at the blockade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;These people are stopping me from going in, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/390215569\">they&#8217;re not Wet&#8217;suwet&#8217;en<\/a>. And I found it a really hard feeling to find other people stopping me to work on my own land\u2026.my experience with all the people I talk with, my friends and other people, they are for it. Because our band council and our chief, they made the deal. And they were voted by the people of Moricetown [Witset]. Photo from Globe and Mail.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Other Wet&#8217;suwet&#8217;en community members shared Tait&#8217;s frustration at the actions of outsiders claiming to speak in their name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of people out there that don\u2019t even belong from Witset,&#8221; said Clement Mitchell, a Witset band councillor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;They\u2019re kinda&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/390215496\">ruining our names<\/a>&nbsp;and stuff like that. Making us look bad&#8230; If they\u2019re not natives from our village, they shouldn\u2019t even be involved in what\u2019s going on.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bonnie George, a respected member of the Wet&#8217;suwet&#8217;en community, agreed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The Wet\u2019suwet\u2019en nation that\u2019s been publicized in the media right now [is] only a small group that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/392040455\">doesn\u2019t represent that nation<\/a>&#8230; the negative things that are happening in the media, all the protests&#8230; it\u2019s shedding bad light on the Wet\u2019suwet\u2019en people&#8221;, she said. George says her clan elders do not like what they see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;They said, in our language, &#8216;we say kai ays lee,&#8217; which means, &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/392040156\">it\u2019s shameful<\/a>.&#8217; It\u2019s shameful to our people, and it hurts my heart.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<iframe title=\"vimeo-player\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/392040156?h=114f714655\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\"    allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Bonnie George, respected Wet&#8217;suwet&#8217;en voice within her clan&#8217;s hereditary system.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Community members questioning blockader rhetoric tell of abuse and intimidation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Our people are afraid. They\u2019re scared to speak up. Because they\u2019re afraid to be ostracised, they\u2019re afraid to be bullied. They\u2019re afraid to be blasted all over social media about being called a traitor, a sell-out [and] all the harassment and also the vandalism. There\u2019s been a number of people that have had their vehicles vandalized, their homes vandalized, sugar in the gas tank, their cars scrapped up. And, you know, it\u2019s just that fear, and it\u2019s just bully tactics, lateral violence that doesn\u2019t need to happen,&#8221; said George.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That environment of fear persists in the community. In fact, blockade figures from central Canada, with the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nmbL2kYwLB4\">blessing of a faction of anti-development chiefs<\/a>, have escalated tensions through illegal, dangerous, and intimidating behaviour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Jocko-1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-84747\" srcset=\"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Jocko-1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Jocko-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Jocko-1-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Jocko-1.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Corey Jocko of the Haudenosaunee, or Iroquois,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Gidimten\/status\/1460488812748886018\">intimidating a CGL employee<\/a>.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Those agitators recently&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/news.gov.bc.ca\/releases\/2021PSSG0089-002173\">jeopardized the safety<\/a>&nbsp;of over 500 workers when they stole an excavator and destroyed the only road out of the workers&#8217; lodge as food, water, and medical supplies ran low and flooding ravaged the province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But if CGL has widespread support from community members, elected governments, and even some hereditary leaders, why do blockade figures persist in persecuting dissenting voices and threatening workers?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When outsiders, especially non-Indigenous outsiders, tell an Indigenous community that they don&#8217;t have the right to economic self-determination, one has to wonder if they are pushing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Margare7a\/status\/1465047058956513280\">eco-colonialism<\/a>, not reconciliation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Josiah Haynes is Resource Works&#8217; research and communications coordinator.
