First Nations culture along B.C.\u2019s West Coast is rooted in the majestic and monumental cedar tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Known as the \u201cTree of Life,\u201d cedar has a multitude of uses for coastal peoples, says Na\u0332nwak\u0332olas Council President Dallas Smith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But after more than a century of logging, old-growth cedars will no longer be valued solely as a commodity, but also for their incalculable cultural worth, Smith said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Na\u0332nwak\u0332olas Council and a number of forestry companies have made a groundbreaking agreement to ensure monumental sacred trees are protected from logging within members\u2019 traditional territories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Na\u0332nwak\u0332olas \u2014 a collective<\/a> of five First Nations stewarding their territorial lands and waters on northeastern Vancouver Island \u2014 has established a large cultural cedar operations (LCC) protocol with two forestry companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Western Forest Products and Interfor have agreed to abide by traditional laws governing the stewardship of wilkw\/ k \u0313 wa\u2019x\u0331 t\u0142u (large cultural cedar trees) in council members\u2019 territories, said Smith. More companies are expected to sign on soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The council consists of five First Nations members \u2014 Mamalilikulla, Tlowitsis, Da\u2019naxda\u2019xw Awaetlala, Wei Wai Kum, and K\u2019\u00f3moks \u2013 with traditional territories on northern Vancouver Island and the adjacent mainland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

High-quality, old-growth red and yellow cedar trees, vital to cultural practices, such as carving dugout canoes, totem poles and building traditional big houses, are increasingly difficult to find, Smith said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The LCC protocol sets out the operations policies to be followed by logging companies in the First Nations\u2019 combined territories, which cover 21,604 square kilometres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Member nations have likely identified more than 1,000 trees that meet the LCC criteria, said Jordan Benner, Na\u0332nwak\u0332olas forestry and research adviser.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond conserving old-growth trees, the new protocol also protects younger stands of cedars, so they can grow larger to support future generations, Benner added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cultural cedars are identified by a set of criteria beyond size \u2014 such as the quality, health and shape of the tree \u2014 that were established by First Nations carvers, Benner said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Any red or yellow cedars greater than 100 centimetres in diameter with potential as an LCC tree would trigger a potential survey by the First Nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If determined to be an LCC, a tree measuring 150 centimetres or greater in diameter and beyond 12 metres in length would be off-limits for logging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A tree might be several centuries old before it can be used for a large canoe or big house, yet industrial forestry rotations are typically less than 100 years, Benner said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNow, First Nations have more certainty that a specific level of these trees will be considered for current and future generations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The protocol also outlines other forestry issues, such bear-den protection, habitat restoration, and stewardship around salmon streams, Smith said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe’re going to start bringing forward more and more cultural protection for our lands and resources.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
