{"id":81767,"date":"2020-10-26T09:35:00","date_gmt":"2020-10-26T10:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/?p=81767"},"modified":"2024-11-12T02:40:23","modified_gmt":"2024-11-12T02:40:23","slug":"canada-critical-minerals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/?p=81767","title":{"rendered":"Count on Canada for critical minerals"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The World Bank sees future demand like this: \u201cOver 3 billion tons of metals and minerals will be needed by 2050 to scale up wind, solar and geothermal power and energy storage to reach a below-2\u00b0C future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bank adds: \u201cWe know that&nbsp;aluminum, copper and nickel are \u2018critical\u2019 minerals&nbsp;that will play a strong role in the transition to a low-carbon future, as they will be needed for a wide variety of technologies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGraphite and lithium&nbsp;are also \u2018critical\u2019, but their outlook depends on the extent to which battery storage is deployed between now and 2050.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But there\u2018s much more to future demand than just those few items. Canada\u2019s strategic list includes these:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Aluminum, antimony, arsenic, barite, beryllium, bismuth, cesium, chromium, cobalt, fluorspar, gallium, germanium, graphite, hafnium, helium, indium, lithium, magnesium, manganese, niobium, platinum group metals, potash, the rare earth elements group, rhenium, rubidium, scandium, strontium, tantalum, tellurium, tin, titanium, tungsten, uranium, vanadium, and zirconium.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Canada is already the world\u2019s No. 1 producer of potash, No. 2 of uranium and niobium, No. 3 for palladium and titanium, No. 4 for aluminum, indium and platinum, and No. 5 for graphite and nickel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And Ottawa has been saying: \u201cCritical minerals are in increased global demand and needed to support important manufacturing sectors such as communication technology, aerospace and national security, and low-carbon and digital technology.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The US, for one, notes that of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/news\/interior-releases-2018-s-final-list-35-minerals-deemed-critical-us-national-security-and\">35 mineral commodities&nbsp;<\/a>deemed critical by the Department of the Interior, the US was&nbsp;<strong>100-percent reliant on foreign sources&nbsp;for<\/strong>&nbsp;13 in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now China has a new export-control law that it could use to restrict overseas purchases of key minerals and rare earths. So the US, Canada and Australia have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/news\/critical-cooperation-how-australia-canada-and-united-states-are-working-together-support\">made an agreement<\/a>&nbsp;to coordinate critical-mineral mapping and research efforts. And to share information \u201cto help ensure a safe and secure supply of the materials needed for each country\u2019s economy and security.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The federal government and the Mining Association of Canada noted that an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/nearly-90-of-canadians-support-growing-critical-minerals-market-share-mac\/\">Abacus poll<\/a>&nbsp;in May found 88% of respondents wanted to see Canada increase its role in producing critical minerals for world markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Natural Resources Minister Seamus O&#8217;Regan pointed to that finding: \u201cCanadians support growing our market share as a preferred global supplier of critical minerals, products and technologies that are essential to building a net-zero economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs we work to emerge from the challenges and uncertainty brought on by COVID-19, Canada&#8217;s critical mineral resources will lead us to a more competitive and prosperous industry.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And as pressure grows on mining industries to become greener and more sustainable as they produce these commodities, Canada has a special plus to offer: the Mining Association\u2019s commitment to responsible mining through the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mining.ca\/towards-sustainable-mining\/\">Towards Sustainable Mining<\/a>&nbsp;(TSM) program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s a set of tools and indicators to ensure that key mining risks are managed responsibly. It has been adopted by six other mining associations around the world, including Brazil and Norway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then there are Canada\u2019s rare earths. As Natural Resources Canada notes: \u201cRare-earth elements are found in just about every type of high-tech device from smart phones to electric vehicles.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And Canada has some of the largest known reserves and resources of rare earths in the world, estimated at over 15&nbsp;million tonnes of rare earth oxides. But we\u2019re a long way behind&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrcan.gc.ca\/our-natural-resources\/minerals-mining\/rare-earth-elements-facts\/20522\">China and others<\/a>&nbsp;in actual production. From there, there\u2019s one way to go: up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"916\" src=\"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/critical_minerals-1024x916.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-84605\" srcset=\"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/critical_minerals-1024x916.png 1024w, https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/critical_minerals-300x268.png 300w, https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/critical_minerals-768x687.png 768w, https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/critical_minerals.png 1192w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And remember:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In\u00a02018, Canada produced over 60\u00a0minerals and metals worth nearly $47\u00a0billion. Metals represented over 50% of total production<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Canada&#8217;s domestic exports of mineral and metal products reached $105\u00a0billion in\u00a02018, accounting for 19% of total merchandise exports<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As the world becomes more and more digital, and manufacturing becomes greener, there will be increasing demand for critical metals, minerals and rare earths.
