{"id":81775,"date":"2020-10-06T12:57:00","date_gmt":"2020-10-06T12:57:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/?p=81775"},"modified":"2024-11-11T22:11:26","modified_gmt":"2024-11-11T22:11:26","slug":"hydrogen-on-the-way","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/?p=81775","title":{"rendered":"Hydrogen is on the way"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Our follower has yet to address such questions as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where is all this hydrogen coming from? Have we got enough power to produce it? Will it be clean and renewable power? Who is going to produce the hydrogen? Can we make this hydrogen without adding to global CO2 emissions? How are you going to get it to where it\u2019s needed? Can you convert today\u2019s petroleum-burning plants and machinery and vehicles to use hydrogen instead? Can we realistically (and affordably) use it for making steel and cement, heating buildings, and fuelling trains and heavy-haul trucks?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The closest our H2 fan has come to any answer was to tell us that \u201cthe first hydrogen well has opened in Saskatchewan.\u201d That\u2019s not so simple, either. It\u2019s not really a hydrogen well; it\u2019s a pilot project to test a process to extract hydrogen from orphaned oil wells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Canada is already one of the world\u2019s larger hydrogen producers. We make about three million tonnes a year from natural gas, but that also produces carbon dioxide emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alberta already produces&nbsp;about 5,000 tonnes of&nbsp;hydrogen&nbsp;a day to supply its oil-refineries, as noted by federal Natural Resources Minister Seamus O\u2019Regan in an interview on hydrogen in Canada\u2019s future:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHydrogen . . . seems to be the energy source that is going to be the next big thing, some day. You know; it\u2019s just around the corner but the corners keep coming.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Minister O\u2019Regan talks of a goal of producing and exporting \u201cgreen hydrogen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Green hydrogen is produced by using clean and renewable electricity to split water (H2O) into hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O). You need a whole lot of green power to do that.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cGrey\u201d hydrogen is produced from fossil fuels (think natural gas) which means the production at the same time of carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas. About 95% of the world\u2019s hydrogen production today is grey.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cBlue\u201d hydrogen is grey hydrogen, but with the CO2 captured and stored, or reused.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Minister O\u2019Regan says of blue hydrogen: \u201cThe opportunity, I think, on blue, is significant, and it\u2019s significant for us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He\u2019s working on Ottawa\u2019s hydrogen strategy now, and says: \u201cWe\u2019ve got the supply. We believe we have the distribution. And we believe we have the expertise. We have the ability not only to provide our own market with a fuel that I think is going to be increasingly important in a low-emissions future, but I also think we&#8217;ve got tremendous export potential.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Watch and hear O\u2019Regan in this&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/player\/play\/1785168451817\">CBC News video<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We took a look at hydrogen (and its potential in BC, for one) in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/hydrogen-grey-blue\">an earlier story<\/a>. Here now are some updates:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Some analysts expect hydrogen could meet\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rechargenews.com\/transition\/hydrogen-could-meet-quarter-of-worlds-energy-needs-at-11-trillion-cost\/2-1-784290\">24 per cent<\/a>\u00a0of world energy demand by 2050 \u2014 if at an estimated cost of US$11 trillion on infrastructure and a $150-billion subsidy as a starter.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Alberta is about to announce\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/calgaryherald.com\/business\/energy\/alberta-unveiling-plans-to-use-hydrogen-to-cut-emissions-and-produce-more-oil\">plans to use hydrogen<\/a>\u00a0to fuel expansion of oil sands production without increasing emissions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shell plans to back hydrogen fuel cells on the road to shipping&#8217;s 2050\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fuelcellsworks.com\/news\/shell-focuses-on-hydrogen-and-fuel-cells-in-decarbonising-shipping\/\">decarbonization goals.<\/a>\u00a0\u201c2030 is probably a good target seeing a larger-scale liquefied hydrogen movement.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Making steel and cement are huge consumers of fossil fuels. Now a Swedish steel maker has opened a pilot plant to use hydrogen for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theenergymix.com\/2020\/05\/20\/swedish-firm-produces-worlds-first-rolled-steel-with-hydrogen\/\">primary steel<\/a>. And there are also pilot projects using hydrogen in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalcement.com\/news\/item\/11061-green-hydrogen-for-grey-cement\">production of cement<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Now Airbus has announced concepts for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.airbus.com\/innovation\/zero-emission\/hydrogen\/zeroe.html\">hydrogen-powered planes<\/a>\u00a0for short, medium, and long-haul journeys.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We have a long distance to go, but hydrogen is here to stay, and grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A new&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/transitionaccelerator.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Net-zero-energy-systems_role-for-hydrogen_200909-Final-print-1.pdf\">Transition Accelerator report<\/a>&nbsp;sees production in Canada rising 800%, and \u201ca wholesale market potential for hydrogen of up to $100B a year, and potentially more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, for the foreseeable future, hear these words from Minister O\u2019Regan: \u201cOil is going to be with us for quite some time.
