{"id":82669,"date":"2016-04-21T14:27:00","date_gmt":"2016-04-21T14:27:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/?p=82669"},"modified":"2024-11-17T02:26:10","modified_gmt":"2024-11-17T02:26:10","slug":"earthday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/?p=82669","title":{"rendered":"Use more natural gas, urges Conference Board of Canada environment report card"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Canada should transition to alternative fuels like natural gas to cut back on air pollution, says the Conference Board of Canada in&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.conferenceboard.ca\/hcp\/provincial\/environment.aspx\">a new report<\/a>&nbsp;card on the environment that awarded high marks to British Columbia for its work on greenhouse gas emissions and other areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Residents should switch to alternative fuels like natural gas to heat their homes in order to substantially cut back on PM10 emissions, said the board\u2019s first annual environment study released on April 21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a \u201cparticularly bad\u201d record on particulate matter, Canada should also invest in development of alternative fuel vehicle (AFV) technologies, to reduce diesel and gasoline consumption by the transportation industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>British Columbia rated strongly overall on many indicators, even against several countries from western Europe with tiny land areas and no resource economies:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cA\u201d grade for sulphur oxide emissions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cA\u201d grade for low-emitting electricity production<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cB\u201d grades for waste generation, water withdrawals and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The strong performance by BC backs up&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ivey.uwo.ca\/cmsmedia\/2112500\/4462-ghg-emissions-report-v03f.pdf\">an earlier study<\/a>&nbsp;from the Ivey School showing that per capita&nbsp;emissions in BC, Ontario, and Quebec are&nbsp;comparable to best performers in Western Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Reassuringly, several provinces are taking action on the carbon pricing front,\u201d said the report, noting BC\u2019s carbon tax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The conference board did not rank Canada alongside many other resource countries, instead choosing a basket including Switzerland, The Netherlands and Belgium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;As a result, Canada naturally has higher per capita energy consumption than other comparable countries, as a greater proportion of its energy is lost during transmission, and transport distances for goods and people are longer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The report also acknowledged the fact that unlike many other developed countries, &#8220;Canada\u2019s economy relies heavily on primary industries, such as resource extraction and agriculture.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Canada is also relatively far north, and unlike the comparator countries from Europe that are at a similar latitude, Canada does not benefit much from the warmth provided by the Gulf Stream (and, in particular, the North Atlantic Drift). The cold climate means more energy is required for heating, on average, than in many of the comparator countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>British Columbia&#8217;s &#8220;A&#8221; grade for clean electricity places it ahead of global eco-champions Germany, Netherlands, Denmark, Ireland, Austria, Belgium and Finland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Comparing a country like Canada with small, densely populated western European nations is not very relevant.
