And there were still more no-LNG-for-BC messages after the following story appeared on the same day: “The first U.S. LNG export shipment is on its way to Brazil”<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

One anti-developer crowed on Twitter: \u201cToo late for BC LNG. The market is now fully taken by competitors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No sir, the market is not \u201cfully taken.\u201d World demand for natural gas is expected to increase 46 per cent by 2040, driven primarily by the rapidly expanding Asian economies, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And just last week, the IEA\u2019s executive director, Fatih Birol, said the world needs BC LNG<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

BC has a couple of advantages that leave-it-in-the-grounders seem reluctant to acknowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  1. Prince Rupert is 68 hours closer by ship to Shanghai than is Los Angeles. And something like nine days closer to Asia than is the Sabine Pass LNG Terminal on the Texas-Louisiana border. That\u2019s the terminal that shipped the first US LNG to Brazil.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Cool temperatures on B.C.\u2019s North coast mean a 25% energy saving over producing LNG at plants located in warmer-weather regions such as Australia, Qatar or the southern US.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Cutting short the $600-million Douglas Channel LNG project near Kitimat is a disappointment, indeed. It was viewed as a potential quick success for two reasons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n
    1. It\u2019s a smaller project (2.4 billion cubic metres of natural gas per year, compared with 33 billion cubic metres for Shell’s proposed LNG Canada project).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    2. It proposed a floating terminal, meaning it would not have to build a multi-billion-dollar processing plant on land.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Still, by the time it announced its halt last week, Alta Gas had not made progress on getting Ottawa to forget about a $100-million import duty on the floating platform that the company planned to bring in from Asia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Even NDP MP Nathan Cullen<\/a> (Skeena\u2014Bulkley Valley) had been telling Ottawa: \u201cThis represents a tremendous barrier for this small-scale but important project, which has strong support from local communities and First Nations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      In the end, we\u2019ll continue to take some encouragement from BC\u2019s minister of natural gas development, Rich Coleman, who said the Douglas Channel news does not mean BC\u2019s LNG industry is in trouble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      “I think we’ve got some significant FID discussions taking place in the next 60-90 days on a couple of projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      “Obviously there’s been two that have told us they want to get to their FID by end of this year . . .  and they’re much larger. This was a very small project.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Those two would be the LNG Canada project<\/a> (Kitimat, $50 billion) and the Petronas-led Pacific NorthWest LNG<\/a> proposal (Prince Rupert, $36 billion).  Keep your eyes on, as well, the smaller Woodfibre LNG project ($1.7 billion) on Howe Sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      LNG Canada, meanwhile, announced the selection<\/a> of the Ledcor-Haisla Limited Partnership for its Kitimat site-preparation contract. The partnership is between the Haisla Nation and Ledcor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
