For everyone in BC who is tired of depressing economic news, here\u2019s a nice treat. New numbers from Statistics Canada<\/a> show BC\u2019s economy is doing alright, and analysts are predicting<\/a> these nice conditions will last.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I use the terms \u201calright\u201d and \u201cnice\u201d purposefully. We\u2019re certainly not in runaway boom times here. Our situation is more slow, steady and dependable. We\u2019re in a sort of cozy-sweater economy rather than a sports-car economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The latest news describes the year that was: 2014. This was before the collapse of oil prices and the resulting upheaval in Canada\u2019s provincial economic stories. So the 2014 data still show Alberta leading the pack with 4.4 percent economic growth over the year. As analysts at BMO point out<\/a>, this story has already largely collapsed due to the widely reported fallout from dropping oil prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the story\u2019s quite different for 2014\u2019s second-best-performing province. British Columbia pulled off a better than average economic performance, growing at 2.7 percent, relative to Canada\u2019s overall growth of 2.4 percent. And what\u2019s more, BC\u2019s broad-based growth means that we\u2019re likely to see this trend continue into the next few years, according to BMO, likely resulting in BC leading Canada\u2019s economic growth for the first time in a decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Making the most of a diverse resource economy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

So what explains BC\u2019s enviable situation? The short answer is that our diverse economy is performing well overall, thanks in big part to a significant boost from natural resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oil and gas and mining were among BC\u2019s fastest-growing major industries in 2014, growing by 5.9 percent and 4.5 percent, respectively. Manufacturing was also a strong point in BC, and this is largely due to BC\u2019s big resource-related manufacturing industries, wood products and paper, which grew by 5.5 percent and 5.9 percent respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outside the resource sector, we saw strong growth in BC\u2019s biggest sector, real estate, which grew by 3.9 per cent, as well as in retail (4.6 percent) and transportation (3.6 percent). Here\u2019s a breakdown of economic growth in BC\u2019s biggest sectors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The high impact of resource activities<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fact that resources are taking a leading role in BC\u2019s economic growth is good news on a couple of fronts. First off, many of BC\u2019s highest-paid jobs are in the resource sector. According to Statistics Canada<\/a>, the mining and oil and gas industries pay BC\u2019s highest average weekly wages. The average wage in these industries is more than $1,700 a week, which is almost double the average wage in the province as a whole, which is about $870 per week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And as I\u2019ve touched on before, resources play a crucial role in BC\u2019s trade<\/a> with other regions, making up about 80 per cent of our total commodity exports. Growth in our export-oriented industries helps us bring in everything we need in BC that we don\u2019t produce ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being thankful for a diversified economy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And yet, as we look across the border to Alberta, we should remember to be grateful that our economy is not overly dependent on natural resources – or, more accurately, a single natural resource. The fact that BC\u2019s economic growth is broadly based is a blessing, and it\u2019s a major reason why we can expect our current comfortable economic conditions to last.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s not forget, however, that our resource economy plays a crucial role in this diversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
