Here are BC\u2019s 10 biggest sectors by GDP:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"904\" height=\"909\" src=\"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/2015-03-19_GDP_01.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-87875\" srcset=\"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/2015-03-19_GDP_01.png 904w, https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/2015-03-19_GDP_01-298x300.png 298w, https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/2015-03-19_GDP_01-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/2015-03-19_GDP_01-768x772.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 904px) 100vw, 904px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As you can see, the resource sector is BC&#8217;s second biggest, after real estate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What about tourism and high tech?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now you might have noticed that there are a couple sectors missing from this list, in particular tourism and high-tech. They\u2019re not on the list because these sectors aren\u2019t counted as such by Statistics Canada, which is where this data comes from (it\u2019s all from Cansim table 379-0030, if anyone\u2019s curious).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not uncommon to hear that either the tourism sector or the high-tech sector are more important for the BC economy than the resource sector. But do the numbers tell the same story?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Luckily, other organizations have produced estimates for these sectors that we can use to compare. So here\u2019s the high-tech sector, as measured by BC\u2019s statistical agency, BC Stats (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bcstats.gov.bc.ca\/Files\/a49b4a39-255e-41d6-9b93-964d3b280f0f\/ProfileoftheBritishColumbiaHighTechnologySector2013Edition.pdf\">source here<\/a>) and&nbsp;tourism, as defined by the BC Crown corporation Destination BC (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.destinationbc.ca\/getattachment\/Research\/Industry-Performance\/Value-of-Tourism\/Value-of-Tourism-in-British-Columbia-(2013)\/2015-Value-of-Tourism_Full-Report_FINAL.pdf.aspx\">source here<\/a>):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"904\" height=\"769\" src=\"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/2015-03-19_GDP_02.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-87876\" srcset=\"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/2015-03-19_GDP_02.png 904w, https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/2015-03-19_GDP_02-300x255.png 300w, https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/2015-03-19_GDP_02-768x653.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 904px) 100vw, 904px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As you can see, both high tech and tourism are big, important parts of the BC economy, responsible for billions of dollars of economic activity. But no, they are not bigger than the resource sector in terms of GDP, even combined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is the \u201cresource sector\u201d anyway?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, how we define the resource sector matters when doing these kinds of comparisons. When it comes to economic activity that supports a good standard of living, there are lots of other factors worth talking about, including job creation, revenue flowing to governments, exports and the indirect economic impacts of different kinds of spending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ll certainly get around to talking about these topics before too long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Peter Severinson is the Research Director for Resource Works.
