In 2001, annual attendance at the museum was about 25,000, including about 6,500 students. By the end of 2009 it was up to 2,900 and 7,500 students. This year, Clausen expects 70,000 visitors. Without job action by teachers, that would have included about 12,500 students. The addition of the mill show is projected to push total attendance to 90,000 by 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Attractions such as the tunnel ride and mill show will help boost attendance but Clausen emphasized that a primary aspiration of the museum is to tell the stories of the people who lived in the Britannia company town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOver and over and over again, people like stories about people. Britannia, if nothing else, has so many stories and people who did amazing things, who faced challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She noted robust discussions currently underway in B.C. about resource development, and thinks the museum can be part of that conversation \u2014 not through advocacy, but by providing a thoughtful environment where mine activity and mine development can be comfortably discussed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cGiven the scale of the Britannia Mining Museum, its location close to Vancouver city centre and proximity to Lower Mainland tourists, we have a real opportunity to be a partner in telling that story,\u201d Clausen said. \u201cOur immediate community is talking in real terms, asking the question: \u2018What is this thing called resources, and how do we wrestle with it?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe can be part of that conversation. That\u2019s where I think the Britannia Mining Museum and its industry partner have some real opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
