So where\u2019s the good news? The decline has moderated since the recession in 2009, which is &#8211; believe it or not &#8211; a sign of strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"769\" height=\"416\" src=\"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Number_7-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-87954\" srcset=\"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Number_7-2.jpg 769w, https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Number_7-2-300x162.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 769px) 100vw, 769px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"u11807-2\"><strong>2: A more highly skilled workforce<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"u11807-5\">Much like the rest of the Canadian workforce, workers in the forest sector are more educated than ever before &#8211; which they\u2019ll need to be as forestry becomes increasingly high tech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"786\" height=\"359\" src=\"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Number_6-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-87955\" srcset=\"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Number_6-1.jpg 786w, https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Number_6-1-300x137.jpg 300w, https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Number_6-1-768x351.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 786px) 100vw, 786px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"u11825-2\"><strong>3: Net investments rising<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"u11825-5\">Net investments &#8211; which describes money spent on new stuff, rather than maintaining and replacing old stuff &#8211; is trending back up after a big dip following the recession. The figures are, however, still negative, a sign that the sector is still losing assets every year. But not so badly now as a few years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"764\" height=\"369\" src=\"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Number_5-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-87957\" srcset=\"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Number_5-1.jpg 764w, https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Number_5-1-300x145.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 764px) 100vw, 764px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"u11869-2\"><strong>4: Labour productivity growing faster in forestry than in other sectors<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"u11869-5\">While the sector is shrinking, its productivity is making major gains. This chart shows that the amount the sector produces with each hour of work has increased significantly faster than that of the rest of the business sector in Canada. Productivity improvements over the long term are considered essential for any sector to remain competitive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"755\" height=\"352\" src=\"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Number_4-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-87958\" srcset=\"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Number_4-1.jpg 755w, https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Number_4-1-300x140.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 755px) 100vw, 755px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"u11887-2\"><strong>5: Particularly in BC<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"u11887-5\">The BC forestry sector has the second-highest labour productivity in Canada, after Alberta. And BC is closing that gap with the country\u2019s fastest productivity growth, which is almost double the national average.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"795\" height=\"391\" src=\"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Number_3-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-87959\" srcset=\"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Number_3-1.jpg 795w, https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Number_3-1-300x148.jpg 300w, https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Number_3-1-768x378.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 795px) 100vw, 795px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"u11934-2\"><strong>6: And better than similar countries<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"u11934-5\">In terms of growth in labour productivity, Canada has bested, or matched, similar countries, which bodes well for our future competitiveness, all else being equal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"785\" height=\"417\" src=\"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Number_2-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-87960\" srcset=\"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Number_2-1.jpg 785w, https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Number_2-1-300x159.jpg 300w, https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Number_2-1-768x408.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 785px) 100vw, 785px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"u11956-2\"><strong>7: BC\u2019s productive wood-product manufacturing<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"u11956-8\">Unfortunately, the report does not include a chart for this, but BC has shown outstanding productivity improvements in the area of wood-product manufacturing. Labour productivity in this sub-sector improved by 6.4 per cent a year between 2000 and 2012, compared to a national average of 4.5 per cent. The difference is likely due to the larger scale of the manufacturing operations here than in other provinces.<br><br>BUT: Profits are still low<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"u11956-11\">Despite these promising signs, the Canadian forestry sector still has a long way to go to regain the profit levels it saw in the early 2000s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\"
