Added together, this is about 10 percent of the roughly 18 million Canadians in the workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"491\" height=\"335\" src=\"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/pasted_image_491x335_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-87763\" srcset=\"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/pasted_image_491x335_1.jpg 491w, https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/pasted_image_491x335_1-300x205.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 491px) 100vw, 491px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"u19540-2\"><strong>BC\u2019s story similar to Canada\u2019s<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>At the provincial level, however, the study only counts those people who are directly employed in the resource sector and not those in other industries who support them. Still, it\u2019s worth a look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In BC about 111,000 people are directly employed in resource industries, which is about five percent of the workforce &#8211; about the same proportion as the Canadian average. If the same proportion of people are employed supporting these industries as in Canada, this would mean that one in 10 BC jobs are also related to natural resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Compared to other provinces, BC ranks in the middle in terms of both the number of people employed in natural resources and the sector\u2019s contribution to provincial GDP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"309\" src=\"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/pasted_image_594x457_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-87764\" srcset=\"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/pasted_image_594x457_2.jpg 400w, https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/pasted_image_594x457_2-300x232.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"309\" src=\"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/pasted_image_591x457_3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-87765\" srcset=\"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/pasted_image_591x457_3.jpg 400w, https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/pasted_image_591x457_3-300x232.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"u19541-2\"><strong>Big things on the horizon<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>For some, these numbers may look a bit small. When you see numbers showing that the resource sector accounts for 10 percent of BC\u2019s GDP and about five percent of employment, it\u2019s reasonable to ask, is that all? The answer is: No, there\u2019s more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First off, these numbers only indicate what\u2019s taking place in the resource sector itself, not the impact the sector has on the rest of the economy. And we have good reason to think this unreported impact is huge. For instance, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bcstats.gov.bc.ca\/StatisticsBySubject\/ExportsImports\/Data.aspx\">BC Stats<\/a>, 78 percent of BC\u2019s commodity exports are natural-resource products. Also, in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/high-impact.html\">a recent study<\/a>&nbsp;for Resource Works, economist Philip Cross found that one extra dollar\u2019s output from BC\u2019s resource sector is expected to produce an extra $1.74 in the province\u2019s total GDP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Secondly, these numbers are from 2012, a year of low prices for resource commodities and a hurting forestry sector. But times are changing. A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/7-signs-of-strength-in-forestry.html\">turnaround in forestry<\/a>&nbsp;is expected as the demand for housing picks up in the US, and major investments are being made to develop BC\u2019s LNG sector. Industry is seriously worried about creating more jobs than BC can handle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can see just how significant these trends are when you look at the size of ongoing and planned major projects in the BC resource sector. When taking into account normal amounts of capital spending in each province, BC has the second-highest level of incoming projects in the country, after Newfoundland. (To put these big numbers in perspective, I\u2019m showing them as a percentage of the total spending on things like machinery, equipment and buildings in each province in 2012).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"591\" height=\"460\" src=\"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/pasted_image_591x460_4-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-87766\" srcset=\"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/pasted_image_591x460_4-1.jpg 591w, https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/pasted_image_591x460_4-1-300x234.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 591px) 100vw, 591px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"u19542-2\"><strong>Yes, BC relies on natural resources, but we\u2019re not Alberta<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall, these numbers suggest the natural resource sector is currently a crucial part of BC\u2019s economy, and signs point to it becoming much bigger soon. But the resource sector does not dominate our economy to the extent it does in Alberta, Saskatchewan or Newfoundland &#8211; at least not yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"u19542-8\"><em>Peter Severinson is
