<\/figure>\n\n\n\nIf you want to understand why gold in particular remains an obsession with speculators and mining companies around the world, try this anecdote from the well-travelled Mohr.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cRight outside the entrance to the Shanghai Gold Exchange there is a big rock. On the rock it says, written in gold, \u2018The only true money is gold,\u201d Mohr recalled recently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI’ve been to the Exchange, and I noticed that with some interest. They don’t actually let you into the Exchange, by the way. They’re very secretive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Recently, Resource Works spoke with Mohr, a native of B.C., for insight into some of the ways that her index reflects resource-based investment in British Columbia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What\u2019s the value of the mining sector to B.C.?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n The resource industries have always been very important in B.C.\u2019s economy \u2014 and not just outside the Vancouver area. Even the supply-demand conditions for commercial real estate in the downtown core in Vancouver are very much influenced by the state of junior mining. Of course, unfortunately in the past year and a half, equity valuations and the availability of equity capital for junior miners has really diminished and is now quite a challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Aside from gold and copper, what other commodities do you think British Columbians should be aware of?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Forest products are critically important, which you can never forget about. There is also a thriving natural gas industry in the northeast part of the province \u2014 and great hopes of course for LNG exports on the northern coast of B.C., which would be quite a boon to the northern part of the province if it were to happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What happened to gold prices last year, and where do you think they’re headed?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n What happened to gold prices last year was a major correction the gold market. Prices peaked back around September 2011 at $1,921 US per ounce. The bottom in gold prices was $1,180 per ounce towards the end of June 2013 and I believe $1,180 was the bottom in gold. I think all in all, in my view it will trade between about $1,300 US and $1,400 US in the next 18 months but at least it has bottomed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Copper is a major commodity export for B.C., and a primary driver of new mine development in this province. What’s the outlook for copper prices through 2014?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Copper reached an all-time high of $4.60 US per pound on February 14, 2011. The industry generally earned 50 per cent profit margins over full break-even costs, including depreciation. It slipped as low as $2.90 a pound in the middle of March 2014. It still generates a profit margin of about 25 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There are jitters over China’s economic growth prospects, which I think are a little bit overdone. We know that actual copper demand this year in China is going to be quite strong, because of huge investment in the electric power sector in China, which is very copper intensive. There is a lot of urbanization still underway in China with definite plans for more by China’s new leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Late this decade I think there will be quite a big rebound in copper, probably back up to $3.50 a pound, but it’s going to go through a few years of more lackluster and somewhat tighter returns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Patricia Mohr – Photo courtesy of Scotiabank<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Scott Simpson works on communications projects with companies in the British Columbia natural resources sector.
