{"id":83241,"date":"2014-05-12T10:07:00","date_gmt":"2014-05-12T10:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/?p=83241"},"modified":"2024-11-16T14:42:22","modified_gmt":"2024-11-16T14:42:22","slug":"the_site_c_environmental_assessment_is_out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/?p=83241","title":{"rendered":"The pros and cons of power generation plan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"u12076-2\"><strong>Benefits<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A large amount of reliable energy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Low price for future generations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Low carbon emissions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The ability to integrate other forms of renewable energy sources in the future<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Job opportunities, including for small regional businesses and First Nations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Benefits associated with a regional economic boom, including more goods and services available to locals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Appropriate mitigation measures proposed by BC Hydro<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"u12076-24\"><strong>Costs<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>High price in the near future<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Uncertainty over whether the power will be needed in the future<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Significant adverse effects&#8221; on Peace River fish, animals and ecosystems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An end to farming on the Peace Valley bottom lands<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Loss of paleontological, archaeological and historic sites<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Health risks associated with eating reservoir fish that require further study<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Effects on the lands and resources used by Aboriginal people for traditional purposes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Effects on Aboriginal treaty rights that will need to be weighed by governments\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Social risks associated with a regional economic boom, especially with the expectation of a significant number outside workers coming to the area<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"u12076-55\"><strong>Other findings<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There may be more room for energy conservation and efficiencies than BC Hydro provided in their analyses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Alternative types of power projects, such as geothermal, could be pursued at similar costs, which could be built to better match BC&#8217;s energy demand<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Risks related to engineering have been appropriately mitigated in BC Hydro&#8217;s plans<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>BC Hydro&#8217;s collaboration with the local community should allow the community to use the benefits from the project to meet challenges related to health, education and housing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Peace Region is already undergoing significant &#8220;enormous stress&#8221; from other development projects.
