Trump\u2019s 25 percent tariffs have exposed a brutal truth: Canada\u2019s economy, especially its oil exports, is nearly 100 percent dependent on the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Voices are crying out to lament the regulatory chaos, ideological zeal, and whispers of \u201cpeak oil\u201d that stall progress. If Canada won\u2019t build pipelines when its sovereignty and prosperity are at stake, will it ever? The economics are clear, peak oil is a myth, and the only barriers are self-imposed: dogma, tangled rules, and bad thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The infrastructure Canada can command is immense. Four million barrels of crude&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/business\/article\/canada-could-restrict-its-oil-exports-to-us-if-trump-trade-war-escalates\/#:~:text=Canada%20is%20the%20top%20supplier,of%20Canada's%20oil%20is%20produced.\">flow<\/a>&nbsp;to the U.S. daily, and Trump\u2019s threats have made that number look even bigger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Trans Mountain Expansion (TMX) is proof\u2014linking Alberta to Asia\u2019s markets, with royalties already filling public coffers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it\u2019s a lone success. Energy East and Northern Gateway are buried, killed by delays and poor decisions. Private capital is gun-shy, scarred by TMX\u2019s $34 billion price tag, ballooned by a broken system. Why risk billions when the path is a minefield?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The stakes are higher than ever. Forget the claim that oil demand peaks this year at 102 million barrels daily. Experts see a different horizon: Goldman Sachs&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldmansachs.com\/insights\/articles\/peak-oil-demand-is-still-a-decade-away#:~:text=Once%20oil%20demand%20peaks%20in,slower%20adoption%20rate%20for%20EVs.\">predicts growth<\/a>&nbsp;to 2034, OPEC&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/financialpost.com\/pmn\/business-pmn\/opec-doubles-down-on-forecast-for-unfettered-oil-demand-growth#:~:text=from%20our%20team.-,OPEC%20Doubles%20Down%20on%20Outlook%20for%20Oil,to%202050%20Back%20to%20video&amp;text=World%20oil%20consumption%20is%20set,its%20annual%20long%2Dterm%20outlook.\">to 2050<\/a>, BP to 2035\u2014some forecasts&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/global-oil-demand-seen-80-100-million-bpd-by-2035-net-zero-environment-says-bps-2024-11-13\/\">topping<\/a>&nbsp;80 million barrels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Enbridge\u2019s Greg Ebel sees \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bnnbloomberg.ca\/markets\/oil\/2024\/08\/20\/enbridge-sees-strong-oil-demand-in-2050-with-us-supply-growing\/\">well north<\/a>\u201d of 100 million by mid-century, driven by Asia\u2019s demand and the developing world\u2019s hunger for energy. Peak oil is a ghost story, not a reality. Canada sits on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/natural-resources.canada.ca\/energy-sources\/fossil-fuels\/oil-resources#:~:text=Canada%20has%20the%20third%2Dlargest,current%20technological%20and%20economic%20conditions.\">third-largest<\/a>&nbsp;reserves in the world and could dominate the global market, not just feed one neighbour. Pipelines to every coast\u2014east, west, and north\u2014would unlock that future and secure riches for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So what\u2019s holding us back? Ideology, for starters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Environmental lobbying and influence wrap resource projects in suffocating red tape\u2014emissions caps and endless assessments that kill progress. Years of environmental studies and \u201cnet zero\u201d hurdles that no pipeline can clear are choking off bold ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Quebec\u2019s stance has softened under Trump\u2019s pressure, but problematic ideals still linger that blind leaders to reality. The regulatory mess makes it worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today\u2019s system demands a $1 billion bet upfront\u2014engineering, consultations\u2014before a shovel hits the dirt. Companies like TC Energy have been burned before, and others won\u2019t play unless there\u2019s reform. TMX worked because it was a government rescue, but its cost is a deterrent to others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then there\u2019s the mess of bad ideas. Government officials will talk about pipelines one day and then express doubts about them the next, leaving a void of leadership. Former prime minister Jean Chr\u00e9tien very strongly backed a West-East pipeline at the Liberal Party leadership convention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New leader Mark Carney supports energy links but will not name pipelines, even though public support for them has surged. Four out of five Canadians back coast-to-coast pipelines\u2014but leaders continue to waver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If not now\u2014when we\u2019re in a trade war and facing annexation\u2014when? Canada\u2019s future is about the infrastructure it controls, not the excuses it clings to. The wealth is waiting, the demand is there, and the barriers are ours to break. Ditch the dogma, fix the rules, and build.
