{"id":94142,"date":"2025-01-06T10:35:00","date_gmt":"2025-01-06T10:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/?p=94142"},"modified":"2025-03-30T01:14:02","modified_gmt":"2025-03-30T01:14:02","slug":"million-tons-coal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/?p=94142","title":{"rendered":"Coal: one million tons an hour"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Politicians and climate campaigners like to talk of an \u201cenergy transition\u201d in which the world is going to burn less and less fossil fuel, switch to clean (or cleaner) energy, and thus resolve climate issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But so far the \u201ctransition\u201d is not so much about moving away from traditional fuels as about adding renewable energy sources on top of them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2Q089RattdM\">latest episode<\/a>&nbsp;of&nbsp;<em>Power Struggle<\/em>&nbsp;looks at the impact of world use of coal, which is still a prime source of energy \u2014 and growing. That\u2019s bad, we agree, but some uses of coal are going to be hard to change.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Experts have been predicting \u201cpeak coal\u201d for years but they&#8217;ve always been wrong. This year, global coal consumption is expected to reach an all-time high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some key points from our podcast with our Stewart Muir:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The world burns over one million tons of coal every hour. That\u2019s the weight of nearly 5,000 Statues of Liberty or 10 aircraft carriers, or about 247,000 adult African elephants. So make that 37,000 adult African elephants every hour.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Coal energy has enabled millions of people in developing countries to better their\u00a0 lives, and their nations\u2019 economies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India&#8217;s coal consumption went up 10% in 2024. And Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia and Pakistan are increasingly reliant on coal.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>China may have installed more renewable-energy sources, and may lead in electric vehicles, but China&#8217;s green-energy business is built on coal.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So, while we hail the energy transition, and applaud solar energy, carbon capture and more, we still need to talk about the 247,000 elephants in the world\u2019s room \u2014 coal.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clearly, without addressing coal&#8217;s persistent use, the energy transition will
