With federal policies to phase out open-net salmon farming by 2029, coupled with uncertainty over U.S. tariffs, the industry that was once one of B.C.\u2019s most innovative agri-food exports is in crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Indigenous operators like the Kitasoo Xai\u2019xais Nation, salmon farming is not just a business, it\u2019s a lifeline that lifted them out of economic despair to near full employment. More than ever, they need support to survive this storm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The numbers are grim. At its peak, salmon farming&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/seawestnews.com\/aquaculture-when-our-resource-sector-thrives-so-do-our-communities\/#:~:text=At%20its%20height%2C%20this%20sector,partnership%20with%20several%20First%20Nations.\">employed<\/a>&nbsp;6,500 people and generated $2 billion a year for B.C.\u2019s economy. But federal decisions, like the closure of farms in the Discovery Islands in 2020, have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcsalmonfarmers.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Impacts-Draft-Transition-Plan-for-BC-Salmon-Farms-FINAL-241124.pdf\">reduced<\/a>&nbsp;production by 45 percent from 90,000 to 50,000 tonnes, and led to annual losses of over $770 million in economic output, $286 million in GDP, while costing 3,000 jobs and $170 million in family incomes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s hurt companies like Cermaq and Mowi, who have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biv.com\/news\/resources-agriculture\/tariffs-could-be-last-nail-in-the-coffin-for-bc-salmon-farms-10372348\">lost<\/a>&nbsp;30 and 40 percent of their production, respectively. For Indigenous groups, it\u2019s personal. The Kitasoo Xai\u2019xais based on remote Klemtu rely on salmon farming for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biv.com\/news\/economy-law-politics\/salmon-farming-economic-anchor-kitasoo-xaixais-8271953\">51 percent<\/a>&nbsp;of their&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/salmon-farmers-push-back\">$3 million economy<\/a>. Councillor Isaiah Robinson credits aquaculture with a 99 percent employment rate and no suicides in 18 years\u2014a far cry from the days before aquaculture arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the federal government\u2019s transition plan, driven by environmental concerns, ignores its own scientists who say open-net farms pose \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biv.com\/news\/commentary\/opinion-bc-salmon-farming-sector-an-economic-powerhouse-under-threat-10232993\">minimal risk<\/a>\u201d to wild salmon. This push to land-based systems sounds green but it\u2019s a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.seafoodsource.com\/news\/premium\/aquaculture\/canada-s-push-to-transition-to-fully-land-based-salmon-farms-not-viable-bc-report-says\">fantasy<\/a>. Experts say it would take at least a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/salmon-farmers-push-back\">decade<\/a>&nbsp;to make land-based farms viable and even then they\u2019d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/seawestnews.com\/energy-risks-grow-for-land-based-salmon-farming-in-british-columbia\/\">struggle<\/a>&nbsp;with high costs, power shortages and unproven economics.Meanwhile the US which buys 60 percent of the product sold my companies like Cermaq, are threatening universal 25 percent tariffs on Canadian goods.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cermaq\u2019s Nick Dicarlo says even a week of tariffs is brutal, last week\u2019s shipment&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biv.com\/news\/resources-agriculture\/tariffs-could-be-last-nail-in-the-coffin-for-bc-salmon-farms-10372348\">cost<\/a>&nbsp;an extra $33,000. Indigenous operators feel this deeply. Seventeen First Nations have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstnationsforfinfish.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/FNFFS_report_web-2.pdf\">agreements<\/a>&nbsp;with salmon farmers yet Ottawa\u2019s policies are impeding their right to economic self-determination. The Coalition of First Nations for Finfish Stewardship says&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/seawestnews.com\/first-nations-plan-their-own-transition-process-for-b-c-s-salmon-farming-sector\/\">closing<\/a>&nbsp;the remaining farms would kill 4,560 jobs, 1,000 of which are held by Indigenous people.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the Kitasoo Xai\u2019xais losing half their economy means mortgages unpaid and dreams shattered, as industry advocates have asked, how are they supposed to keep going? The Wei Wai Kum and We Wai Kai Nations are even&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/b-c-first-nations-fish-farm-renewal-1.6787685\">suing<\/a>&nbsp;Ottawa claiming their title rights to decide what happens in their territory are being ignored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s a better way. Industry advocates have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcbc.com\/news\/bc-salmon-farming-sector-an-economic-powerhouse-under-threat#:~:text=Salmon%20farming%20began%20in%20B.C.,concerns%20about%20its%20environmental%20impact.\">proposed<\/a>&nbsp;a no-cost solution: innovate ocean-based systems with new technology to protect wild salmon and keep jobs. By 2030 this could grow the sector to $2.5 billion in output and 9,000 jobs\u2014sustainable, and without taxpayer billions. It\u2019s a plan that respects Indigenous voices and coastal realities, unlike the path of closures and vague promises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Support now means action: pause the 2029 ban, fund this alternative transition and shield the industry from tariffs. Canadians can help too\u2014buying local salmon could ease the pressure though it won\u2019t replace the US market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Without intervention B.C. will lose a sector that feeds millions, employs thousands and anchors Indigenous progress. The Kitasoo Xai\u2019xais and others aren\u2019t asking for handouts\u2014just a fair chance to keep what they\u2019ve built.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An industry that
