{"id":97459,"date":"2025-05-21T16:13:32","date_gmt":"2025-05-21T16:13:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/?p=97459"},"modified":"2025-05-21T16:15:20","modified_gmt":"2025-05-21T16:15:20","slug":"ksi-lisims-lng-gets-an-exciting-boost","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/resourcework2.devstudio.work\/?p=97459","title":{"rendered":"Ksi Lisims LNG gets an exciting boost"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Nisga\u2019a Nation\u2019s planned Ksi Lisims LNG project has been given a key push forward by France\u2019s TotalEnergies, which has agreed to buy LNG from the plant for 20 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TotalEnergies, the world\u2019s third-largest LNG player, has <a href=\"https:\/\/totalenergies.com\/news\/press-releases\/canada-totalenergies-signs-agreement-export-2-mtpa-lng-20-years-ksi-lisims-lng\">signed an agreement<\/a> for the purchase of two million tonnes of LNG a year from the floating liquefaction plant in northern BC, subject to the project\u2019s final investment decision. That\u2019s 16.66 per cent of the plant\u2019s planned output of 12 million tonnes a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s the second such agreement, the first being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksilisimslng.com\/news\/ksi-lisims-lng-and-shell-finalize-sale-and-purchase-agreement\">inked<\/a> with Shell in January 2024. That also covered the purchase of two million tonnes a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ksi Lisims LNG thus has pre-sold a third of its planned output of 12 million tonnes a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TotalEnergies will also acquire a 5 per cent stake in Western LNG, partner, developer and future operator of the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project is now in the \u201ceffects assessment\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/projects.eao.gov.bc.ca\/p\/60edc23bc69c5e0023a12539\/project-details\">process<\/a> of the BC Environmental Assessment Office (BCEAO), which is acting for BC and the federal government. The associated 800-km PRGT natural gas pipeline project also awaits a decision from the BCEAO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ksi Lisims is looking toward a final investment decision and a start on construction later this year, with a target of starting to ship LNG in 2029.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TotalEnergies\u2019 agreement (with TotalEnergies Gas &amp; Power Asia Private Limited) was hailed by Eva Clayton, president of the Nisga\u2019a Lisims Government:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis year marks the 25th anniversary of our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nisgaanation.ca\/government\/nisgaa-treaty\/\">landmark Treaty<\/a>. For a quarter of a century, Nisga\u2019a citizens have waited to see the kind of transformative opportunity our Treaty envisioned. That\u2019s why it is especially meaningful to see Ksi Lisims LNG progressing steadily toward construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTotalEnergies shares our vision of bringing cleaner energy to the world, advancing Indigenous leadership in the global economy, and sharing our deep commitment to environmental stewardship.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plant aims to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksilisimslng.com\/project\">net-zero<\/a> for emissions, although the timing depends on when BC Hydro can feed it enough power. \u201cPowered by renewable hydroelectricity, Ksi Lisims LNG will be the lowest-emission-intensity LNG facility in the world, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.projects.eao.gov.bc.ca\/api\/public\/document\/67e6facb8211a700221cd236\/download\/Attachment%201_%20Minister%20letter%20to%20CEAO_21%20Mar%202025.pdf?amp=;amp=\">net-zero ready<\/a> by 2030.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BC initially required new LNG plants to have net-zero emissions by 2030, but earlier this year changed that to a requirement that plants have credible plans to be \u201cnet-zero ready\u201d by 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>St\u00e9phane Michel, president of gas, renewables and power at TotalEnergies: \u201cThis purchase of LNG from the future Ksi Lisims LNG plant will allow us to diversify our LNG portfolio in North America and benefit from competitive LNG supply in Western Canada to better serve our Asian customers, with whom we are developing a significant portfolio of long-term supply contracts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;As part of our integrated strategy, we are also pleased to partner with Western LNG to support the development of this very low CO2-emission liquefaction plant project.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It will be sited at Wil Milit on Nisga\u2019a territory at the northern tip of Pearse Island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Davis Thames, CEO of Western LNG: \u201cTotalEnergies is the largest purchaser of North American LNG, and one of the largest producers and portfolio players in the world. Their experience with development and operations will be a welcome addition to the project as we move steadily toward FID later this year so that we can provide reliable, low-carbon Canadian LNG to
